Hurricane Preparedness Pack Program
As hurricane season approaches each year, Meals On Wheels of Tampa provides all of their recipients with a Hurricane Preparedness Pack. Our seniors and homebound are most vulnerable if a storm were to hit Tampa, in part because many are unable to evacuate and most have health issues that make it difficult to ride out a storm. Hurricane Prep Packs are necessary for each recipient to have, in case Meals On Wheels is unable to deliver meals in the event that a storm does hit Tampa. With the support of caring people in our community, every recipient receives a pack at the start of hurricane season (hurricane season is June 1st-November 30th each year), which includes 5 shelf stable meals, a gallon of water, a shelter application, and an emergency resource guide.
Community groups and individuals gather on the 3rd Saturday morning in May at Meals On Wheels of Tampa to prepare each pack and hand them out as volunteers drive up to pick up the packs for the recipients on their route.
This pack is free of charge to all Meals On Wheels recipients and is delivered to everyone on the program.
Support the Hurricane Prep Pack Program
A collection drive for monetary donations towards 3,500 shelf stable meals and 700 gallons of water takes place each year on Give Day Tampa Bay and throughout the month of April & May on our website. If you would like to make a monetary donation to provide water and shelf stable meals for the packs on our website, please indicate ‘hurricane program’ in the company field on the donation form.
Funds collected on Give Day Tampa Bay will be used to support the Hurricane Prep Pack program, as well as general programing needs required to feed and care for our elderly, disabled and homebound neighbors.
Sign up to deliver Hurricane Packs on Saturday, May 20th, 2017!
Volunteers will deliver the packs between 9:30am-12pm on Saturday, May 20th, 2017. Recipients do not have to be home to accept the pack. To see a map of the routes, please click here.
