High School Leadership Board (HSLB)

The mission of the High School Leadership Board (HSLB) is to connect high school students with Meals On Wheels of Tampa and their community, through a variety of activities including volunteering, fundraising and program development.

A service-learning and leadership development group comprised of outstanding high school junior and senior students.

Developed in the Fall of 2015 to provide a unique opportunity for students who want to get more involved with a local non-profit, focused on senior hunger.

These students contribute to and inform Meals On Wheels of Tampa programming, while acting as ambassadors and leaders in their communities.

Water On Wheels (WOW)

It is recommended that seniors drink at least 8 8oz glasses of water each day. Unfortunately, recently collected data shows that 87% of Meals On Wheels of Tampa recipients drink less than this recommended amount even though 94% reported that they believe drinking water is important to their health.

Meals On Wheels of Tampa’s High School Leadership Board (HSLB) developed and introduced a new program, Water On Wheels (WOW), on May 21 2016, to encourage healthy hydration. The student led group, which is comprised of Junior and Senior students from 5 local high schools, raised funds to provide reusable water tumblers, flavor packets, and educational materials to all 700+ seniors and homebound served by MOWTampa each day.

In order to continue impacting the health impact of WOW on our Recipients, current HSLB President, Maggie Fitzsimmons, took this project a step further, by applying and receiving the first ever Lightning Community Heroes of Tomorrow award (click here to see a 2 min video)!  Thanks to the generosity from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, all active Recipients on the Meals On Wheels of Tampa program will receive free water bottles, along with their hot meal delivery, Monday through Friday, throughout 2017. The expansion of the WOW program will encourage healthy hydration among MOWTampa’s 700 senior and homebound Recipients by providing a free, daily, serving of clean drinking water. Volunteers delivering WOW with daily hot meals will also be asked to offer ‘cracking’ the bottle open for those that may have difficulty doing so.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for the way you have allowed us to be involved with MOW these past two years… I really hope you know that starting the HSLB has had such an impact on all of us that have been a part of it. Getting to witness how dedicated you all are to helping others has really changed my perspective on what it means to get involved and volunteer. I’m so inspired by the excitement and passion you all have… I will never stop being so thankful for this and for all you guys do for our community every day… Again, thank you so much for all of your kindness to me… I thoroughly loved every second I have spent with you all, and I’ve learned more than I ever imagined I would. I know that my memories of being able to work with a nonprofit and make a difference will stick with me for the rest of my life. You all have such a passion for helping others that I found to be contagious, and I can only hope that I am able to have this same drive when I am an adult and am choosing what I want to spend my life doing.

2016-2017 Board President, Class of 2017, H.B. Plant High School

I think that the High School Leadership Board provided me with a unique and incredibly valuable opportunity to enhance my skills in real world problem solving. It was a great experience to be able to work to help an important organization in the Tampa Bay area and to learn how to kickstart and fund a brand new project. It was wonderful to meet and get to know the MOW staff and the rest of the members on the board. This opportunity also proved very helpful when applying for college and other internships.

Being a part of the High School Leadership Board for the last two years has been an amazing and completely unique way to get involved in the community and give back and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the board.
